How to play Sort the Season

Touch controls: Tap one of the four large season bins under the word; each bin is at least 56 pixels high and 44 pixels wide, sits in a two by two grid so a thumb can reach every season, and the word card stays above the bins on a 320 pixel wide phone so nothing has to be scrolled.

Keyboard controls: 1 sorts to spring, 2 to summer, 3 to autumn, 4 to winter, Enter or Space starts a run from the title or the end screen, P or Escape pauses and resumes, R restarts, M toggles sound.

Screen: This game works best in any orientation.

About Sort the Season

Sort the Season is a word game about meaning rather than spelling. One word waits on the sorting shelf at a time and four season bins stand underneath it: spring, summer, autumn and winter. Every word on the list belongs to exactly one of those seasons, so the whole task is recognition at speed - a blossom belongs to spring, a conker to autumn, mittens to winter - and no word is ever a trick spelling puzzle.

A single word never matters much, but the clock does. Each word carries its own timer bar, a wrong bin takes three seconds off that bar, and a word whose bar empties slips past and costs one of three spillages. Sorting quickly pays twice over: once for the correct bin and once for every whole second left on the bar when the word lands.
