Free Android Apps for Vocabulary Study and Reading

Combine flashcard review, offline dictionary lookup, and stored reference reading around the words you want to learn.

How we chose these apps

  • Flashcard review and vocabulary lookup
  • Offline access to downloaded study material
  • Ways to add or import learning content
  • Free features, accounts and download requirements

Vocabulary study has several parts: checking a meaning, keeping a record, and returning to it later. These apps cover different parts of that routine. Use them for scheduled review, word lookup or reading alongside your lessons.

AnkiDroid for repeated flashcard review

AnkiDroid lets you create and import decks, schedule reviews with spaced repetition, and inspect study statistics. A deck can hold words, example sentences, images, or audio. Optional AnkiWeb synchronization uses that service's account. Check a shared deck's contents before relying on it.

QuickDic for offline dictionary lookup

QuickDic reads downloaded dictionary files on Android. Use it to look up a word while reading, switch between supported dictionary pairs, and collect entries into a word list. Download the dictionaries you need before a trip or an offline study session. The app is a reference tool; a dictionary lookup does not itself schedule review.

Kiwix for downloaded reference material

Kiwix reads supported ZIM archives without a continuing internet connection once the required file is available. An archive can hold a reference collection that you want to read alongside your vocabulary study. Check the archive's language and contents, allow enough storage, and choose material suited to your level.

Start with a short passage, check unfamiliar words, and keep a small set for later review. Choose resources you can understand and return to regularly; choose learning material that fits your level.

The apps we recommend

Which app to choose

Use AnkiDroid for planned review, QuickDic for dictionary lookup, and Kiwix for reference reading from downloaded archives. Check the language and content of each deck, dictionary, or archive.
