How we chose these apps
- Quick notes and checklist tools
- Plain-text or formatted editing
- Local storage and cross-device synchronization
- Free notebook, attachment and reminder limits
A shopping list, a long piece of writing, and a notebook shared between devices need different tools. Start by deciding where your notes should live and which kind of editing you use most.
Quick notes and checklists
Notally offers a compact place for written notes and lists, with formatting and reminders. It is a practical choice when you want to open a note quickly and keep the editing tools close by. Fossify Notes also provides notes, checklists, and appearance controls. Both have a verified free Android listing.
Plain text and Markdown
Markor suits writing that you want to keep in ordinary text files. It includes Markdown editing, task lists, and sharing tools. File-based notes can fit an existing folder workflow, but you need to decide how those files will be backed up or transferred.
Notebooks on several devices
Notesnook adds notebook organization and encrypted synchronization. Its free plan has published limits for notebooks, tags, attachments, and reminders. The checked plan allows 50 notebooks, 50 tags, 50 MB of monthly attachment uploads, a 10 MB limit for each file, and 10 reminders. Read the current plan before relying on attachments for a large collection.
Choose the app around the work you do most often. A local list and a synced notebook are both useful, but their storage and account requirements differ.
