You'll need a capo on the 4th fret for both versions in this lesson. The intro, verse and prechorus are identical no matter which path you take, so you can learn the whole first half of the song before you decide anything. The chorus is where it splits. I watched a heap of Noah's live performances and kept seeing chord shapes that made no sense in standard tuning. Turns out he drops the G string down three semitones to an E, which opens up those ringing voicings he's using. So I've taught it two ways. Version one is standard tuning, everything stays where it is, and it sounds great. Version two is Noah's actual tuning, one string down, which gets you closer to the record. Learn the standard version first, then have a play with the detuned one if you're curious. Little bit of trivia. Noah wrote this with his guitarist Noah Levine and produced it with Aaron Dessner, and there's a moment in the chorus that deliberately reuses an image from Northern Attitude off Stick Season. Same picture, completely flipped meaning. On the older song it was an observation about someone back home, here it becomes an offer to sit in the mess with them. Nice bit of songwriting when you catch it. Take your time with the picking hand. There's no prize for speed here and it sounds gorgeous slow.
