Now in its eleventh year, BMI's annual pre-GRAMMY event, "How I Wrote That Song" offers insight into the craft and creative process behind today's biggest hits. For this year's iteration, held in Harlem's World-Famous Apollo Theater in Manhattan, BMI assembled a stellar lineup of producers, songwriters such as Faith Evans, RedOne, Tory Lanez and Mark Batson to share their stories and offer their advice about songwriting and making music. Moderated by BMI's Vice President, Creative, Catherine Brewton, the panel was treated to a surprise guest, as renowned hit-maker Rodney Jerkins, also known as DarkChild, assumed the stage to provide invaluable advice and encourage the crowd to never give up on their craft. From the red carpet, check out BMI songwriter/producer Mark Batson, the man behind hits by Jay-Z, Nas, Eminen, Alicia Keys, Dave Matthews and so many more, as he fields our rapid-fire questions in this latest edition of 60 Second Sessions. The Company negotiates music license agreements and distributes the fees it generates as royalties to its affiliated writers and publishers when their songs are performed in public. In 1939, BMI created a groundbreaking open-door policy becoming the only performing rights organization to welcome and represent the creators of blues, jazz, country, and American roots music. Today, the musical compositions in BMI's repertoire, from chart toppers to perennial favorites, span all genres of music and are consistently among the most-performed hits of the year.
