Sir Arthur Conan Doyle drew his inspiration for the world’s most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, from his mentor, Joseph Bell, a Scottish surgeon and professor at the University of Edinburgh. Synopsis: Joseph Bell, the great-grandson of the first Scottish scientific surgeon, Benjamin Bell, was born in Edinburgh in 1837. He received his MD from the University of Edinburgh in 1859 and grew to become an accomplished surgeon, authoring several medical textbooks and appointed as personal surgeon to Queen Victoria during her visits to Scotland. He also became president of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1887, becoming the fourth consecutive generation in his family to do so.Outside of clinical practice, he was a pioneer in early forensic science, using keen observation and exam to deduce ostensibly unknown facts about patients and strangers. Using these gifts, he worked closely with police on multiple investigations, including the Ardlamont mystery of 1893 as well as a profile of Jack the Ripper. It was this seemingly mystical gift of observation and deduction that led to Arthur Conan Doyle’s inspiration for the fictional shrewd detective, Sherlock Holmes. He was able to speculate things such as where sailors had been based on their tattoos, or a man’s profession after examining his hands.Conan Doyle met Dr. Bell in 1877 while in medical school and subsequently became his clerk. Years later, Conan Doyle reflected in a letter to Dr. Bell that “it is most certainly to you that I owe Sherlock Holmes, and ⋯ I do not think that his analytical work is in the least an exaggeration of some effects which I have seen you produce in the outpatient ward.” Historical Significance: Joseph Bell was the real-life inspiration of Sherlock Holmes, who has become one of the most famous fictional characters in literature and has left a lasting mark on popular culture. Doyle’s characters continue to inspire readers worldwide and have been adapted into multiple films and television programs over the past century.
